Plan Your Visit

For 90 years, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey has been recognized as a leading arts institution in the tristate region, serving over 30,000 individuals each year. Comprised of a Studio School serving children, teens, and adults; a contemporary art museum; educational in-community programs serving K-12 schools; and art & healing programs in conjunction with health and social service organizations, the Art Center engages the community in visual learning, interpretive programs, and art-making experiences. Our facilities are easily accessible by car or train. Parking is available on site.

The Art Center’s Exhibition Galleries will be closed for New Year’s Eve and Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving; the Studio School and offices will be closed for additional holidays. View our calendar for holidays and other closings.

The Art Center is located within walking distance of the Summit train station, which is serviced by NJ Transit’s Morris & Essex Line.

For the protection of the works of art and our visitors, the following policies currently apply when you visit the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey:

  • Do not touch works of art. Dirt, moisture, and other contaminants present on hands can stain or corrode the surfaces of artworks. Some works are more fragile than they appear, and even simple touching can cause permanent damage.
  • Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Visitors will be asked to present all carried items for inspection upon entering the galleries.
  • A checkroom for large bags is free of charge and located at the entrance.
  • For the safety of the artwork and our visitors, nothing may be carried on your back. Any bag, umbrella, or other items that cannot be carried reasonably and safely in some other manner must be checked.
  • Food and beverages are not allowed in the galleries.
  • Phone calls are not allowed in the galleries.
  • Photography for personal use is permitted except where specifically prohibited. Flash photography, monopods, tripods, and selfie sticks are not permitted.

The Art Center is wheelchair accessible. Special accommodations for any individual requiring assistance with this or other disabilities can be made. Please view our ADA Request Policy.
