7622 Mixed Media Collage Intensive

Use all your artistic abilities and skills to create a 14×14 inch mixed media collage while learning about color, design, pattern, drawing, watercolor, and more. Topics will include: creating a template; basic drawing, watercolor, and collage techniques; creating and deconstructing patterns; asymmetrical balance; extending the color palette; proper gluing; and varnishing. Demonstrations of materials and techniques will help guide students through their artistic process and creative journey. Some materials provided. Additional supplies to be discussed during the first class.

7651 Mixed Media Explorations

There is no limit to the possibilities in this mixed media class. Students will work in layers experimenting with additive and subtractive techniques using acrylic paint, acrylic mediums, plaster, fabric, paper, images, and stencils to create beautiful multi-dimensional surfaces on canvas and paper. Each lesson will include demonstrations as well as review of select contemporary mixed media artwork. The class will revisit color selection process, and encourage students to play with composition, loosen up, and mix it up while having fun with endless experimentation. Some materials provided. Feeling inspired by the spring season? In this 5-week class, students will learn different and basic watercolor techniques to create a variety of flowers, such as daffodils, lilies, and irises. The instructor will provide step-by step demonstrations on how to draw each flower focusing on color, composition, and perspective.

7652 Children’s Book Illustration

Learn how to bring a story to life visually and create a look that is dynamic, compelling, attractive, and FUN! Join Kat Block, the artist of Little Mouse, to develop an illustration style for your own original story or existing nursery rhyme. Students will be instructed in the best ways to emphasize the most important aspects of their story using composition and page placement, color, values, and proportion. Students will also learn techniques for online researching of images to ultimately create more accurate and convincing drawings.

This drawing and painting open studio is designed for intermediate to advanced students who already have experience in the medium of their choice. Students will be encouraged to pursue their individual drawing and/or painting practice with the support of the instructor. Each class will begin with a brief visual presentation on a particular artist or art movement to gain inspiration. Students are free to work in any of the painting and/or drawing media: acrylic, oil, watercolor, gouache, graphite, pen and ink, charcoal, colored pencils, oil, or chalk pastels.

7691/7692 The Magic of Metal Clay

Metal clay is a unique material that consists of particles of metal suspended in an organic binder. It can be formed like clay, but when fired yields a solid metal object. Students will be introduced to working with a silver-based metal clay. Learn how to model, texture, and set stones in clay that will be fired to create beautiful finished pieces of jewelry. No jewelry experience necessary! Some materials provided. Additional materials to be discussed in first class.

Embark on a creative journey of fine art photography with your iPhone and editing applications! Students will delve into a variety of techniques to elevate their imagery. Students will experiment with composition— including the rule of thirds and framing—to craft visually compelling arrangements. The instructor will provide demonstrations on how to utilize natural light to enhance mood and how to infuse depth through strategic shadow play for an interesting photo. Through experimentation, the class will focus on the following: color textures, abstract, nature, and everyday objects. Please bring an iPhone 11 or newer to every class.

This class will introduce students to the world of abstract photography. Students will be encouraged to experiment using their iPhone as a powerful tool for artistic expression. Students will learn how to capture unique abstract images by focusing on details often overlooked in everyday environments, such as scratches on walls, light reflecting off objects, textures of surfaces, and more. Please bring an iPhone 11 or newer to every class.

7701 Color & Shape: Abstract Portraits

Let your imagination run wild with color! In this class, students will be encouraged to explore abstract portraits with a focus on design, color, and expression. Working from a photo, students will learn how to transform planes, areas, and features of a face into abstracted shapes. An array of abstract portrait examples will be shown for students to gain some inspiration. Gouache is recommended, but students may work in their medium of choice.

7702 Loosen Up Your Paintings

Do you wish your paintings had a looser and more painterly quality? This class will offer techniques to help students achieve that goal! Many famous painters, like Sargent and Matisse, learned by setting up an easel in a museum and reproducing the brushwork of earlier artists. Each week, this class will study a different artist to analyze their paint and brush handling. Students will engage in weekly painting exercises, gain practical skills, and practice good painting habits, allowing for more confidence and freedom.

7718 Introduction to Watercolor Pencils

Thursdays, 6:30–9 PM
Watercolor pencils are a versatile medium. Experiment with a variety of watercolor pencil techniques: using them as traditional watercolors, drawing with them and blending colors with water, drawing on wet paper for bold vibrant colors, and using them for fine details. Students will have the opportunity to make a series of small drawings applying the different techniques and create small watercolor paintings using the skills they have learned.
