The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey’s Studio School, located in Summit, NJ, offers classes and workshops for artists of all ages and skill levels. Taught by experienced teaching artists, our programs span painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and more—providing a supportive environment for learning, exploration, and creative growth.

8270 From String to Things!: The Art of Weaving (ages 7–9)
Instructor: Madeleine Johnson
Wednesdays, 4–5:30 PM
Get ready to weave, warp, twist, and tie in this fun-filled, hands-on, fiber arts class. In this exciting class, students will get to work in the magical world of textile arts, exploring yarn techniques, felted fabrics, and playful pattern–making. Each week, students will bring textiles to life with exciting projects such as pom–pom monsters, nature–inspired collages, and colorful yarn portraits. Towards the end of the course, students will participate in a collaborative project where they will weave together all of the exciting new skills they have learned! With every twist and tie, students will learn fine motor skills, creativity, and collaborative skills, all while making textile crafts of their own.

Thursdays, 6–7:30 PM
Stuffed animals, mittens, and scarves–oh my! Calling all young crochet enthusiasts who are interested in learning the basics or want to bring their fiber art to the next level! Students will explore this beautiful and versatile art form by learning basic crochet stitches, learning how to read a pattern, and being guided through their own projects of choice. Join this cozy class and leave with crochet knowledge and wonderful creations! Depending on project and skill level, students will walk away with 1–3 completed crochet projects.

Join this fun and creative class, where you’ll have a blast sewing your own unique plushies and cozy pillows, weaving beautiful fabrics by designing your own patterns on looms, and learning the crochet basics with personalized one-on-one guidance. You’ll develop new skills while making colorful, one–of–a–kind fiber art projects that let your creativity shine. Whether you’re new to fiber arts or already crafty, this class is a fun and welcoming place to create, learn, and make new friends. Based on project focus and skill level, students will create at least 1–3 projects.
