7342 Color & Shape: Abstract Portraits

Let your imagination run wild with color! In this class, students will be encouraged to explore abstract portraits with a focus on design, color, and expression. Working from a photo, students will learn how to transform planes, areas, and features of a face into abstracted shapes. An array of abstract portrait examples will be shown for students to gain some inspiration. Gouache is recommended, but students may work in their medium of choice.

7356 Fabric Art

Want to work with fabric, but don’t want to sew? Fabric can be used for much more than just sewing! In this class, students will learn about quilts, landscapes, and abstract and object studies, as well as basic art principles such as color, composition, and pattern. Students will create three to five finished pieces using an assortment of fibers and beads. While no sewing is required, students will have the opportunity to use a sewing machine to add to their work if they desire.

7349 Mixed Media Collage Intensive

Use all your artistic abilities and skills to create a 14×14 inch mixed media collage while learning about color, design, pattern, drawing, watercolor, and more. Topics will include: creating a template; basic drawing, watercolor, and collage techniques; creating and deconstructing patterns; asymmetrical balance; extending the color palette; proper gluing; and varnishing. Demonstrations of materials and techniques will help guide students through their artistic process and creative journey. Some materials provided. Additional supplies to be discussed during the first class.

7343 Sketching for Every Artist

Every artist can improve their drawing abilities, whether as a basic foundation for work in another medium or for the simple pleasure of sketching itself. Develop your observational and rendering skills through sketching in charcoal and pencil from still lifes, photos, and plein air studies (weather permitting). Emphasis will be on creating accurate and simplified drawings as students learn to think in basic shapes and gestural lines. Principles such as line quality and tonal values will be addressed. Sketches by noted artists will be discussed to reinforce concepts in class.

7382 Painting from Photographs

Transform your photograph into an exciting painting! In this class, students will consider different ways to redesign photos through editing, cropping, experimenting with color, scale, and more. The instructor will show a variety of artists for students to discuss. Students will create a sketch of basic shapes and values before painting, which will establish a strong foundation. Individual support and a friendly atmosphere will inspire their creativity. Students may work in their choice of paint media and bring their own references to work from. The instructor will provide some references as well.

7402 The Beautiful Art of Chinese Brush Painting

Intrigued by Chinese brush painting? Learn to use simple brush strokes to create vivid images of flowers, birds, fish, bamboo, and more while also practicing how to incorporate texture and unique wash techniques essential for landscape painting. Individual attention is given to students of all levels.

7414/7415 The Magic of Metal Clay

Metal clay is a unique material that consists of particles of metal suspended in an organic binder. It can be formed like clay, but when fired yields a solid metal object. Students will be introduced to working with a silver–based metal clay. Learn how to model, texture, and set stones in silver–based metal clay that will be fired to create beautiful finished pieces of jewelry. No jewelry experience necessary! Some materials provided. Additional supplies to be discussed in first class.

7420 Loosen Up Your Paintings

Thursdays, 9:30 AM–12 PM
Do you wish your paintings had a looser and more painterly quality? This class will offer techniques to help students achieve that goal! Many famous painters, like Sargent and Matisse, learned by setting up an easel in a museum and reproducing the brushwork of earlier artists. Each week, the class will study a different artist to analyze their paint and brush handling. Students will engage in weekly painting exercises, gain practical skills and practice good painting habits, allowing for more confidence and freedom.

7463 Monoprint Printmaking & Beyond

In this class, students will learn a variety of printing techniques such as monotypes, monoprints, collagraphy, linocuts and transfer methods. There will be an emphasis on process and experimentation. Some materials provided. Additional materials needed, will be discussed on the first day of class.

7421 Inner Landscapes

Thursdays, 9:30 AM–12 PM
Artists have used painted interiors throughout art history: from Da Vinci’s Last Supper to Matisse’s brightly furnished rooms, to the mystery of Hopper’s shadows. Our personal spaces reveal much about us. Each week, students will learn about a different artist and gain inspiration on painting interiors. Students will learn the basics of perspective, composition, values, and light and shadow while focusing on expression and drama rather than making actual architectural renderings. The instructor will have a variety of images for students to work from. Students are encouraged to bring their own references and work in their choice of medium.

7465 Introduction to Watercolor Pencils
Instructor: Traci Zaretzka
Thursdays, 6:30–9 PM
Watercolor pencils are a versatile medium. Experiment with a variety of watercolor pencil techniques: using them as traditional watercolors, drawing with them and blending colors with water, drawing on wet paper for bold vibrant colors, and using them for fine details. Students will have the opportunity to make a series of small drawings applying the different techniques and create small watercolor paintings using the skills they have learned.
