Explore encaustic, the art of painting with molten beeswax mixed with colored pigments and resin. This unusual medium provides results like no other with mysterious, deep, and translucent colors. In this two-day workshop, we will be focusing on wheel-thrown lidded jars. We will explore multiple techniques to create lidded forms in a variety of shapes and styles, from sugar jars to cookie jars, the possibilities are endless. Lidded forms are a great way to build technical skills where students will utilize precision to create a functional and beautiful piece of art. This workshop is designed for intermediate and advanced students. Clay will need to be purchased on the first day of the workshop.

This two-day intensive workshop will focus on teaching the techniques of creating jewelry using wax carving and construction methods. Wax is a very versatile medium and allows the artist to create fluid, intricate, sculpturally exciting works. Once the wax model is completed the piece will be sent out for casting into silver or gold and then finished in the studio.

6614 Screen Printing Crash Course
Instructor: David DiMarchi
Using contemporary screen-printing methods, artists will approach printing through direct and photographic means, creating an edition of prints through a combination of image and color. Students will familiarize themselves with various image-making and inking techniques, and learn the steps needed to create a small edition of screen prints using water-based inks. This technique-driven, no-stress workshop is a perfect starting point for students wanting to explore art-making in new ways. No experience is necessary and beginners are encouraged!

In this two-day metal clay workshop, students will create a one-of-a-kind, semi-adjustable free formring from silver metal clay! During the first session, students will design, construct, and finish their rings before they are fired in the kiln. During the second session, students will size, polish, and finish their rings. In this one-day workshop, students will explore the importance of exploiting shadows in landscapes. Shadows are critical in creating drama and depth. Students are encouraged to bring references and the instructor will provide guidance on their painting. The instructor will also discuss a color palette that best fits the subject matter and do a demonstration.

6623 Mosaics: Tiny Pieces Make the Big Picture
Instructor: Donna Conklin King
Welcome to the world of mosaics, where not only is it okay to break things, it’s expected! This intensive workshop will introduce beginners to the basics of mosaic making. Learn about the amazing variety of materials and adhesives, design and composition, cutting and laying out tiles, and the grouting process. Materials such as vitreous glass tile, ceramic tile, stained glass, and china are available for students to explore and incorporate in their work. Students will complete an 8×6-inch mosaic by the day’s end. All materials provided.

Gel plates have a soft, gelatin-like feel, but are durable, reusable, and simple to work with. Learn the process of monotype printmaking using acrylic paints with this versatile and economical printmaking tool. Explore mark-making and layering techniques to create prints that can stand alone as artwork or be used as a foundation for other mediums.

Prepare for your garden as we look forward to spring! Learn to make plant pots for your home, inside and out! In this one-day workshop, students will be given the opportunity to make a variety of planters such as pots with a saucer, ones with drainage holes, two-in-one planters, strawberry plant pots, and even learn how to make a watering bell. Decoration and texturing techniques will also be discussed and the instructor will provide a demonstration on how to make custom garden stakes. This workshop is designed for intermediate and advanced students. Students can finish their pieces during class time or there are ceramics open studios available during the semester if they wish to register and glaze their pieces once bisque-fired. The materials fee covers the bisque firing. Clay will need to be purchased on the day of the workshop.

Learn relief printing from start to finish. Through instructor demonstration and hands-on experience, students design, cut, and print a linoleum block print. We cover troubleshooting and fixing common printmaking problems, as well as creating finished proofs and editions.

Ever wanted to try oil painting? Now is the time! This workshop will introduce you to the wonderful world of oil paints. In this one-day workshop, students will sip tea while making special head ornaments of their choosing based on one of three styles that the instructor will provide. The instructor will also demonstrate a variety of techniques such as fold forming, chasing, forging, and fabricating. This workshop is designed for students with some metalworking experience. Most materials will be provided. Students who choose to work in sterling silver must purchase it at a vendor prior to the day of the workshop.
