5068 Great Beginnings: The Ultimate Introduction to Clay

Want to get your hands dirty and have a blast in the process? Great Beginnings is the class for you! Let’s make plates and cups with saucers, build vases, perfume bottles, a box or two, and perhaps a bit of sculpture. Let’s even try our hand on the potter’s wheel! This class will feature a little bit of everything, a bunch of fun, and a supportive environment.

4899/4900 Advanced Wheel Throwing: Tightening Up Your Skills & Achieving Your Goals

This limited-size advanced class is for students who have been working on throwing skills in larger classes and would like to take advantage of an intimate setting with additional, valuable, one-on-one time with the instructor. Students will have the opportunity to work on a body of work under the supervision of the instructor. Increased individual attention will allow troubleshooting of throwing problems and work towards achieving new throwing goals.

5054 Magic in the Machines: New Projects with Ceramic Equipment

The ceramics studio has all sorts of great equipment including extruders, a slab roller, and wheels. It also contains textures, gadgets, and hidden treasures just waiting to be discovered and become part of your designs. In this class, we will explore ways to utilize the underappreciated studio assets to create both sculptural and functional ceramic items. Along the way, we will seek out ways to develop your personal style and make our machines your friends. This class will will give students the opportunity to push clay and imagination to the limit as we create everything from perfume bottles and vases to chalices and architectural features.

Enter the world of wheel-thrown pottery! Throw pottery on the wheel, trim, and apply surface decorating methods. Learn how to create and finish beautiful vases, bowls, and plates, including glazing techniques. Class is limited to six students for maximum attention.

4940 Closed Form & Narrow Neck Ceramic Forms

Tuesdays, 9:30 AM–12 PM
This intermediate wheel-throwing class will allow students to challenge themselves by learning to throw a variety of closed forms on the wheel as well as narrow neck vases. Lessons will include narrow neck vases, closed form jars and trinket boxes, closed form spheres, transforming a closed form into a wall pocket, throwing a hollow donut shape and turning it into a vase, and throwing and altering decorative fruit and pumpkins on the wheel. Class size is limited for maximum individual attention.

5110 Functional Pottery: Strategies & Techniques

4975 New Approaches to Glazing & Finishing Ceramics

In this five week class, come try something new and add some fun tricks to your glazing and finishing repertoire. You will learn how to use slip and underglaze, create monoprints, and use the sgraffito technique to carve designs into leather-hard clay. You can experiment with bubble-glazing by trying diswashing soap mixed with glaze. You can even explore making stencils on a Cricut machine to mask off areas before glazing. Both wheel throwers and handbuilders are welcome. Please bring both bisque-fired and leather-hard pieces for glazing and decorating. New pieces can also be created.

5107 NEW! Handbuilt Functional & Sculptural Ceramics

Create functional and sculptural ceramic pieces while learning foundational handbuilding techniques in this class for all levels. Begin with the fundamentals of handbuilding and create pieces employing pinch, coil, and slab construction. From this foundation students will be able to combine techniques to create both functional ware and sculptural pieces of their own design. Glazing and finishing techniques will also be explored.

5059 Set the Table: Wheel-Thrown Kitchen & Table Ware

This class will focus on functional pottery such as bowls, plates, mugs, and other kitchen goods. Focus will be on form, function, design, problem-solving, and consistency and on building skills such as centering, pulling, trimming, finishing, and glazing. Students will develop an attention to detail while developing their own unique style. Self-driven projects are welcome.

Learn how to design, create, and finish your own ceramic jewelry in this unique clay/jewelry hybrid class! Students will make their own ceramic jewelry set using techniques such as slab rolling, texturing, and cutting. Students will learn about various finishing techniques and how to attach jewelry findings to complete their jewelry pieces. Some materials provided.

Do you have a project inside you that is yearning to get out? Can’t figure out how to get started, or worse, you have hit a snag? Perhaps you saw something cool and want to try to make it yourself. This is the class for you! Instructor Peter Syak will offer specialized instruction and technical expertise to help you figure out what you want to create, then help you to build it. This will be a unique experience—part workshop and part learning laboratory. This class is limited to six students to allow for ample individual attention.
