The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey’s Studio School, located in Summit, NJ, offers classes and workshops for artists of all ages and skill levels. Taught by experienced teaching artists, our programs span painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and more—providing a supportive environment for learning, exploration, and creative growth.

Teen Special Subject Classes

8785 NEW! Art History Appreciation (ages 13–17)
Instructor: Dawn Noonan
Mondays, 6 – 8 PM
Do you enjoy creating art and learning about art history? Then this class is for you! This class will give students the opportunity to learn more about art history through shared discussions and some art making. Topics covered may be beneficial to students who are interested in or enrolled in AP art history at their school. Students will engage in some of the art processes used to create pieces, which may be relevant to the AP art history exam and could be potential talking points for essay responses. Projects will include sculpture, fresco, architecture, and painting as the class moves throughout the centuries.

8875 Arts of Craftivism (ages 14–17)
Instructor: Kristine Leslie
Thursdays, 6 – 8 PM
Artivism is the practice of using creative, artistic expression to promote social, environmental, or political change. Craftivism combines craft and activism, using hands-on art-making as a tool for reflection and social engagement. This class introduces teens to stencil-making, banner-creation, and printmaking techniques while allowing them to find their own voice on a specific subject matter they are passionate about. Students will learn how artists have historically collaborated to challenge injustice and envision a more equitable world. The instructor for this class is fluent in American Sign Language.
