8078 Dry Painting: Representational Art from Upcycled Magazines
Instructor: Laura Shabazz
Fridays, 9:30 AM–12 PM
Unleash your creativity using just paper and glue! In this class, students will begin with a sketch and dive into the world of upcycled art by scavenging a variety of magazines and tearing freehand (no scissors allowed!) to create 2D artworks. Over the course of the class, students will learn to select the perfect magazines and tear with precision, explore how pattern can create depth, and experiment with incorporating text into their collages. Through simple exercises, like creating a color wheel and shading a sphere, students will gain confidence in this medium before applying their skills to create a landscape collage of their choice. Let’s piece together something extraordinary! Please bring at least 3 magazines to the first class. Look for glossy pages with vivid patterns (magazines that rely on their images, not their articles–fashion, architecture, art, and National Geographic, for example. Time, People, newsletters, and catalogues don’t have the right paper.) Ask at your local library or on Facebook Marketplace/Buy Nothing sites.
