Artist’s Statement:

Photographer Barbara Beeman started the body of work featured in Old Glass in 2019 while taking a walk near the Hoboken light rail station. She noticed how the station’s glass dividers, installed to protect commuters from winds coming off the Hudson River, have certain transformative properties. When seen in the right light, the glass can render a person or object into an entirely new entity.

Artist’s Bio
Beeman began taking photos through the glass, letting the light transform her subjects. By shifting the camera in different ways, new patterns and subjects appeared, as if the previously obscured images only came into focus through the curved old glass. As she has continued to experiment, Beeman increasingly sees the work of surrealists and impressionists, like Salvador Dali and Vincent Van Gogh, emerging in her photos

Barbara Beeman studied photography at Jersey City State College. She briefly worked as a reporter and photographer at The Hudson Dispatch before pursuing a career in social work. She began exhibiting her photographs in 2004 and has since shown at a variety of local venues, including Bayonne City Hall and the Secaucus Public Library. Beeman is also a musician who performs folk and blues music with Bill Bannon.
