The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey’s Studio School, located in Summit, NJ, offers classes and workshops for artists of all ages and skill levels. Taught by experienced teaching artists, our programs span painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and more—providing a supportive environment for learning, exploration, and creative growth.

8822 Felted Art: Needle Felting in 2D & 3D
Instructor: Martha McDonald
Wednesdays, 9:30 AM – 12 PM
Needle felting is a fun fiber technique that is easy to learn and full of possibilities! Through demonstrations and step–by–step instruction, students will transform colorful wool fibers into beautiful, tactile felted images and objects. Techniques covered will include how to form basic shapes, layer colors, add details, and more. This class will explore creating landscapes, abstract works, and sculptural 3D pieces. Some project examples include forest animals and succulents. Also, students will be able to incorporate found objects and mixed media into their creations. Students are encouraged to come to class with their own ideas of what they wish to make with felt. Some materials provided.

8803 Introduction to Sewing
Instructor: Jessica Garber
Thursdays, 4 – 6:30 PM
In this class, students will learn the basics of sewing by creating their own one-of-a-kind fashion accessories! Utilizing sewing machines, students will make their own custom tote bags and zippered pouches during this course. The instructor will provide demonstrations for each project and show ways to enhance accessories by incorporating pockets, zippers, and handbag snaps. How to thread and use a sewing machine will be shown. No prior sewing experience necessary. Some materials provided.

8873 Introduction to Weaving on a Four-Shaft Loom
Instructor: Ellen Hess
Thursdays, 6:30 – 9 PM
This class is the perfect introduction to handweaving on a four-harness tabletop loom. Learn how to weave a variety of structure and color patterns such as tabby, tweed, satin, houndstooth, and more. Over the course of the class, students will create their choice of a scarf, wall piece, or table runner. Finishing methods will also be discussed and demonstrated.
