Annual Report

July 1, 2023–June 30, 2024

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS & THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

A child artist showing her work.

As we reflect on Fiscal Year 2024 (July 1, 2023–June 30, 2024), we are proud to share the many remarkable achievements the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey accomplished. This year marked a period of growth, innovation, and resilience, as we continued our mission to foster creativity and community through art.

One of the most significant milestones this year was the first full year of the Nicholson Foundation-funded programs, which allowed us to expand our work at the intersection of art and healing. These programs have reached vulnerable populations across New Jersey, including formerly-houseless veterans, individuals who are formerly incarcerated, and families facing food insecurity. Through the transformative power of art, these programs have provided healing, self-expression, and connection to individuals who need it most, and we are profoundly grateful for the support that makes this work possible.

FY24 also saw a major renovation of our museum galleries, which has transformed both the functionality and aesthetic quality of the Art Center’s physical space. The renovation includes significant updates to gallery lighting and the enhancement of the physical environment in which the art is presented. Improved sight lines and layout modifications have created a more open and welcoming space, allowing visitors to engage more fully with the exhibitions. In addition, we made upgrades to accessibility features, including a new front door that is easier to navigate for those with visual impairments, ensuring that all members of our community can enjoy the Art Center comfortably and safely.

These improvements have elevated the visual impact of our exhibitions and made the galleries more flexible for future programming, enabling us to offer a wider range of artistic experiences to our audiences. The renovation represents a significant investment in the long-term future of the Art Center and ensures that our museum continues to meet the highest standards for both the artwork on display and our visitors.

Another key highlight of this fiscal year was the development of our 2025-28 strategic plan. With the help of thoughtful input from our stakeholders and expert guidance, we have been laying the foundation for the Art Center’s future, ensuring that we remain responsive to the needs of our community and aligned with our vision for the years ahead. The strategic planning process has reinforced our commitment to inclusivity, innovation, and sustainability, and we are excited to move forward with a clear and focused path in 2025.

Throughout the year, we have also continued to offer a robust array of exhibitions, classes, and public programs that engage and inspire. Our exhibitions have showcased both established and emerging artists, reflecting the diversity and dynamism of the contemporary art world. Our Studio School has remained a hub of creative learning, offering a wide range of courses for all ages and skill levels, while our community programs focused on arts education for K–12 and art & healing have reached school children and adult groups across the region. Details on all these programs can be found in the pages of this annual report.

As we look to the future, we are filled with gratitude for the support of our donors, members, and partners who make everything we do possible. Your generosity and commitment have enabled us to serve as a vital cultural resource for our community, and we are honored to have your partnership in this important work.

We are excited to share more details of our FY24 accomplishments in this annual report and to continue building on the momentum of this extraordinary year.

With deep appreciation,

The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey remains steadfast in its dedication to providing a diverse and enriching array of artistic experiences to our community. The accomplishments and partnerships forged over the past year stand as a testament to our unwavering commitment to our vision: To create an inclusive and welcoming community where lives are transformed and enriched through the shared experience of art. We extend our deepest gratitude to the donors, collaborators, and friends whose trust and support make these vital programs possible.

Special Note from the Executive Director:
As Anne prepares to step down from her role as Board Chair in November 2024, I would like to take a moment to express our collective gratitude for her leadership and unwavering dedication to the Art Center. Anne has been instrumental in guiding us through a period of growth and transformation, and her vision and commitment have left an indelible mark on this organization. I know I speak for many when I say that her influence will continue to shape the Art Center for years to come.

VISION, MISSION & VALUES

VISION

To create an inclusive and welcoming community where lives are transformed and enriched through the shared experience of art.

MISSION

The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey nurtures the capacity for personal expression, expands the creative experience, and fosters stronger communities by empowering people to see, make, and learn about art.

VALUES

In our work, we embrace the following values:

CONNECTION: We foster connection among our community members through a respectful and safe environment.

INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY: We welcome and value diverse backgrounds and viewpoints, and nurture an environment that is open and supportive.

EXCELLENCE: We are committed to providing outstanding services and programs. We direct our collective efforts to continually improve and innovate.

CURIOSITY & CREATIVE RISK-TAKING: We value receptivity, open dialogue, and innovative thinking, so as to encourage curiosity and creative risk-taking.

HOLISTIC APPROACH: We value a holistic approach to art in the individual and community life, so that art is found in every facet of life.

ADVOCACY: We value standing up and speaking out for the arts, in order to promote our vision and values.

STUDIO SCHOOL

The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey’s Studio School—one of the largest non-university arts programs in the state—proudly offers an extensive curriculum that includes hundreds of classes, workshops, and camps focusing on a variety of media. Its renowned faculty of professional teaching artists serves thousands of students of all ages and skill levels each year.

Studio School Graphic for the FY24 annual report

Fiscal Year 2024 was a very successful year for the Studio School. We served a total of 4,729 students through 514 classes, workshops, and camps. Classes held at the Art Center strive to promote the social/emotional wellbeing of our students of all ages. We meet each student where they are to enhance the impact our classes have.

Supporting Students
We have a long-time adult ceramic student in their 80s who recently developed cognitive and memory issues, affecting their ability to participate in class. We arranged for a one-on-one classroom aide with experience in ceramics to work with this student. The aide brings creativity, support and kindness to this situation and has enabled the student to continue creating art. The class instructor and other students have observed what a positive impact the one-one-one aide has had on this student.

Fostering Independence
We have an adult painting/drawing student with limited mobility affecting their dominant hand. Using a standing easel for painting was challenging, but a ready-made product that would provide the extra stability needed for her canvas did not seem to exist. Staff worked with the student and the instructor to purchase and modify an iPad holder to create a better, custom support for the drawing surface. This increased the student’s independence and allowed them to need far less direct support; the student has even replicated this system at their home studio.

Sharing Opportunities
Before the renovations on our Main Gallery began, teaching artist Doug Baron was invited to create a mural on the gallery wall, which would serve as a time capsule living underneath the new gallery walls. After his initial mural was done, Doug was eager to include his young, school-age students by allowing them to contribute to the mural.

EDUCATION & ARTS + HEALING

An Example of One of Our Programs
Empowering Kids Organization has partnered with the VACNJ since 2019, offering art programs for children from underprivileged backgrounds, enabling them to explore various art forms, discover their talents, and develop a passion for art. In FY24, we continued our partnership by offering four impactful workshops: “Exploring Art Materials and Techniques,” “Experiencing Art through Photography,” “Ceramics,” and “Batik.”

The art programs have shown a transformative effect on the children involved, often altering their initial perceptions of art education. While some students began the workshops at the request of their parents, their enthusiasm grew significantly over time. Their positive feedback, especially during final project presentations and subsequent re-enrollments, is evidence of the impact on their outlook and engagement with art.

For many participants, the workshops provided their first experience visiting an art exhibition. The field trip to the VACNJ’s exhibitions exposed the students to professional artwork, inspiring them to envision their own creations on display. Witnessing the children’s reactions and hearing their reflections on these artworks demonstrated an evolving appreciation for visual art and its possibilities.

The workshops culminated in student exhibitions, where the children presented their completed art projects. These moments allowed them to experience the pride of showcasing their work publicly and developed their confidence in speaking about their artistic processes and ideas. Through these experiences, participants not only gained artistic skills but also improved their public speaking abilities and boosted their self-confidence.

The programs fostered a sense of community and belonging among the children, many of whom had recently moved to Summit. Through shared artistic exploration, participants connected with their peers, creating friendships and forming a supportive community within the workshops.

For students who demonstrated a passion and aptitude for art, scholarships were offered for continued education at the VACNJ. This opportunity provided them access to advanced classes that would otherwise be unaffordable due to financial constraints.

The Art Center’s Education and Arts + Healing Programs have a wide-reaching impact that speaks to the heart of our vision—creating an inclusive and welcoming community where lives are transformed and enriched through the shared experience of art.

ARTS & CARS

The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey was proud to once again partner with Summit Downtown, Inc. for the 2023 Arts & Cars event. Held on Sunday, September 17, 2023, this beloved annual festival brought together art, music, food, and the classic charm of vintage automobiles for a vibrant celebration in downtown Summit.

As part of the event, VACNJ organized 28 booths featuring juried arts and craft vendors, a project of the Art Center’s Members Committee. This initiative offers VACNJ members a special opportunity to show, share, and celebrate their work with the community. The booths displayed a wide variety of original creations, including paintings, sculptures, jewelry, and more. By curating this selection, the Art Center helped elevate the festival’s cultural experience and fostered a deeper connection between artists and the community.

In addition to the arts and crafts, attendees enjoyed live music, a diverse selection of food and drink, and a range of family-friendly activities. Car enthusiasts were treated to a display of classic and exotic cars, presented in collaboration with the Summit Elks.

Arts + Cars continues to be a wonderful example of how VACNJ engages with the community, celebrating creativity and bringing people together in a dynamic and festive environment. We look forward to growing this tradition in the years to come.

FUNDRAISING

Positive Space Gala Logo

On Saturday, April 27, VACNJ held its annual spring gala at Canoe Brook Country Club, hosting the largest turnout in over a decade. The signature event raised over $350,000 to support the Art Center’s powerful arts programming.

The evening, which was presented by Premier Sponsors Chubb and Risk Strategies, featured live music, delectable food and drinks, and custom chocolates by Kate Weiser. The gala’s signature live and silent contemporary art auctions showcased over sixty artists, and celebrity auctioneer CK Swett oversaw the lively and robust bidding. The Art Center recognized Estelle Fournier of Partner in Art, LLC as its 2024 honoree and awarded its seventh annual Changemaker Award to Evonne Davis and Emma Wilcox of Gallery Aferro for their contributions to advancing human dignity and beauty through the visual arts.

“This year’s gala was a wonderful celebration of the Art Center’s impact on the community and the state,” said gala co-chair Susan Cagnassola. “We are thrilled with the evening’s success and the vital work it enables the Art Center to continue.”

The Art Center’s annual spring gala is critical to enabling its important work of transforming and enriching lives through the shared experience of art. Next year’s gala will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025.
