This class offers a taste of various mediums such as drawing, painting, and sculpture geared towards younger artists’ abilities. Expose youngsters to different artistic expressions and strengthen existing foundations. Creativity and fun are highly emphasized making for a comfortable and encouraging environment for budding artists. Each medium is experimented with in a different method and/or combination each semester so students may repeat this class multiple times.

Come and explore the possibilities of this vibrant and versatile medium. Learn various painting techniques, how to make textures in watercolor using a variety of materials, and how to layer and blend color to create luminosity. Students can reproduce the painting demonstrated in class or work from their own sketch or photo reference. Individual attention will be emphasized.

Does your child draw all the time? Like a sport, drawing is a skill that improves with practice. This class will build upon basic drawing skills—such as contour lines and shading—to give students confidence in their abilities. In addition, at the beginning of the session, a sketchbook will be given to students for additional, although not mandatory, practice at home (fun and creativity are always the main priority!) to help reinforce lessons and develop skills learned in class.

Discover the creative possibilities that polymer clay has to offer. Students will learn basic techniques such as rolling, sculpting, baking and gluing. Once those skills are mastered students will move on to more advanced techniques such as forming canes, marbling effects, simulating textures, making frames, building miniature items, and creating faux stones. Discover an art that fosters creativity and challenges the boundaries of your imagination—illustration! Create your own museum using cardboard, wood, paint, model magic, and more. Learn about art from different time periods and styles and create your own masterpieces to hang in your museum. Create a splatter painting like Jackson Pollock, learn about Surrealism with Magritte, create an Egyptian style self-portrait, and create unique sculptures like Jeff Koons. Students will also create furniture and “lighting” for their museum. We will hang images of famous artwork next to the images you create to build a truly unique museum!

Go play in the snow and create your own winter wonderland diorama complete with glittering white snow, model magic snowmen, and a cozy house. On day one students will build a papier-mâché mountain and paint a wooden house. Make art with your mark! Create your own tag using soft and sharp shapes, wild style, or Gothic font. Learn how to create 3D letters using perspective and make connected letters that flow. Next, you will draw a background setting and arrange your graffiti into an aesthetically pleasing composition. Finally, you will build your own 3D graffiti wall and tag it! Fine art concepts such as composition, perspective, color theory, and sculpting methods will all be taught alongside graffiti techniques. Some materials provided.

Learn the ins and outs of an incredibly accessible medium—pastel sticks! Through weekly reference guided demonstrations, students will be given the opportunity to explore pastels in different subject matters including still life, landscapes, and portraits. Students will learn a variety of techniques such as blending, color mixing, layering, texture, and composition. Moreover, students will be encouraged to take the skills that they’ve acquired and use them to pursue their own pastel masterpieces.

This introductory watercolor class will teach students essential foundational techniques, while also exercising their creativity and encouraging them to experiment. Students will gain an understanding of water usage, color mixing, and creating cohesive washes of color. Also, this kind of knowledge will be expanded with the integration of more intricate techniques such as glazing, layering, creating textures, and utilizing the whites of the paper. There will be opportunities for students to work with a variety of subject matters such as landscapes, florals, animals, and illustrations.

With an emphasis on artistic individuality, your teen will build a solid drawing and painting foundation through demonstrations and experimentations. Students will develop their own styles and, at the same time, learn fundamentals of drawing and painting by exploring color and shadow to create still lifes, portraits, and more. Students will have the opportunity to work from a clothed model.

Learn all the tricks used in the comic book industry to digitally color black and white line art. Students will learn how to scan in their line art drawings to add effects and colors with the various tools available in Photoshop. In addition to the exploration of posters and comic books, students will gain techniques in lettering, photo manipulation, and more.

This course is an introduction to the world of character design for comics, video games, animation, and more. This class highlights the various subjects needed to learn how to develop exciting characters. Each week students are introduced to a new professional character designer’s work, and a specific project is given to practice techniques and imaginative drawing. Areas of focus will be on gesture drawing, introduction to basic anatomy, portrait sketching, and how to do turnarounds when developing a character. Some basic drawing skills are needed to get the most from this class.

Oil paints have been a classic medium for centuries because of their luminosity and ease of use. Learn the foundation skills of painting in oils in this introductory course. We will cover the basics, including blocking in a composition, color mixing, value studies, and proper handling of materials. Students should wear clothes that can get messy.

5687 Drawing & Painting: The Next Steps (ages 13–17)

Advance your drawing and painting techniques using graphite, charcoal, and oil paint. Students will work on still lifes, drawing from a model, perspective, color, and composition. They will then organize a group of work into a cohesive collection and develop a portfolio for future college use. Some materials are provided.

Teen Workshops
5734 NEW! Winter Landscapes in Watercolor (ages 14–17)
Instructor: Mark de Mos
Students will have the chance to paint colorful snow scenes by starting with a quick introduction to concepts of painting snow. They will learn how snow reflects the colors around it in the shadows, and how its highlights reflect the light source. This workshop will cover the basics of creating snow scenes from your own reference photos (photos can be snow free and the instructor will demonstrate how to add snow to the scene). Additionally, the instructor will provide a demonstration on using gouache to create the effect of falling snow using a toothbrush.
