This comprehensive class will cover the foundational skills and techniques of jewelry making, while also offering more experienced students the opportunity to build their skill set. Students will learn how to plan and fabricate jewelry pieces of their own design in a fun and encouraging environment. Some materials provided. Additional materials will be discussed in the first class.

5567/5575 Jewelry & Metalsmithing

Study with working artist, master metalworker, and instructor of more than 30 years at the Art Center Sue Sachs. Learn jewelry and metalsmithing techniques through demonstrations, discussion, and individualized instruction using silver, copper, brass, or all three in combination. Start by designing your own piece and learn core techniques such as sawing, filing, soldering, texturing, and polishing to bring it to life. Students will be led through a skills-based curriculum, enabling them to learn and grow skills at their own level and pace. Please bring a sketchbook to the first class to work on your design and take notes. Other materials will be discussed in class.

5719 NEW! Soldering Techniques: Basics & Beyond
Instructor: Jessica Garber
Tuesdays, 12:30–3 PM
Learn the techniques needed to solder jewelry as well as gain additional skills throughout this foundational class. Techniques will be taught sequentially during projects that include making a custom ring, learning to make your own bespoke bezel setting, and soldering links for a one of a kind bracelet complete with handmade clasp. Each student will get individual attention and work at their own pace in order to achieve their personal goals during this course.

5637 The Magic of Metal Clay
Instructor: Kelly Green Grady
Wednesdays, 6:30–9 PM
Metal clay is a unique material that consists of particles of metal suspended in an organic binder. It can be formed like clay, but when fired yields a solid metal object. Students will be introduced to working with PMC3: a silver-based metal clay. Learn how to model, texture and set stones in PMC3 that will be fired to create beautiful finished pieces of jewelry. No jewelry experience necessary! Some materials provided. Additional materials to be discussed in first class.
