5037 Painting from A-Z

This general painting class places the emphasis on oil painting, but you may work in the medium of your choice. Each class will begin with a short talk or demonstration covering multiple topics. Explore your inspiration and discover your vision.

5101 Contemporary Realism
Instructor: Duane Lutsko
Wednesdays, 12:30–3 PM
Study the methods used by the Old Masters and take a closer look at contemporary realist painters to understand the principles of representational painting. Students will produce a series of paintings in which they strive for proficiency in painting various genres. Technical and conceptual issues explored include surface preparation, pigments and mediums, grisaille painting, glazing, observational exercises, landscape and still-life painting, lighting, and alla-prima techniques. Formal demonstrations and slide discussions will reinforce principles covered in class.

5001 Introduction to Watercolor Pencils
Instructor: Traci Zaretzka
Saturdays, 10 AM–12:30 PM
Watercolor pencils are a versatile medium. Experiment with a variety of watercolor pencil techniques: using them as traditional watercolors; drawing with them and blending colors with water; using them for fine details; and drawing on wet paper for bold, vibrant colors. The first part of the workshop will be a series of small drawings applying the different techniques. In the second part of the workshop students will have the opportunity to create their own small watercolor paintings using any or all of the techniques learned in class.
