Sarah Canfield, Into the Machine, Mixed media, 36 x 36 inches.
Disintegrate is a cross section of paintings and mixed media works investigating the tension between humans, technology, and the environment. Each piece begins with ideas and images generated from still life photographs that are abstracted both in camera and through painting, digital manipulation, and mixed media processes. The completed works are real and dreamlike, manmade and organic, intellectual and emotional. Each piece uses a peculiar combination of manmade and organic forms to investigate the intrusion of technology into the natural world. As the objects disintegrate or melt away, they become as short lived as the latest electronics on the market. The conflict between human and machine is explored while simultaneously blurring the lines between photorealism and abstraction.
