In a daily video diary\, Paul details his day-to-day life with his new condition. But when his estranged mother arrives\, Paul is forced to face hard family truths that had been buried for years\, even as everything else slips away. SUMMARY:Summer Art Camp: Week 6
DESCRIPTION:APPETITE FOR ART (ages 5–9)\nJuly 24–28\, 10 AM–3 PM\nDig in! This week of camp will feature art projects inspired by delicious foods and snacks. Campers will learn several art techniques while cooking up projects like a mouthwatering clay cheeseburger and a mixed-media artwork of a breakfast skillet. \nPAINTING WITH PASTELS AND SOFT SCULPTURE (ages 10–12)\nJuly 24–28\, 10 AM–3 PM\nPainting with Pastels: Pastel straddles the line between painting and drawing. During this camp\, tweens will be introduced to the essentials needed to draw and paint using pastels. This will include fundamentals such as drawing\, light and shadow\, composition\, color theory\, and basic perspective. Both still life and landscapes will be the subject matter for finished works of art.\nSoft Sculpture: This camp takes the best of fiber arts and sculpture and merges them into a whole new art form: soft sculpture! Using textural materials such as felt\, fibers\, and notions\, along with imagination and creativity\, campers will design\, prototype\, and create both relief sculpture and sculpture in the round. Being able to sew is a bonus—but not necessary! —since multiple methods of soft sculpture construction will be covered. Tweens will create several projects ranging in scale over the course of the week. \n NEW! FASHION & FABRIC DESIGN (ages 10–12) WAITLIST ONLY\nJuly 24–28\, 10 AM–3 PM\nNEW! Fashion & Fabric Design: Spend the whole week focusing on one medium! Tweens will have both a morning and an afternoon session focused on fashion and creating with fabric. In this full-day camp\, tweens will explore fashion design starting with sketching concepts and progressing to fabric exploration and learning how to embellish already existing clothing items. Multiple sewing techniques will be covered while tweens create wearable art. Campers will have the opportunity to create their own fabric using dying techniques\, sew a simple garment\, and design and embellish their own t-shirt. \nNEW! PAINTING WITH ACRYLICS (ages 10–12)\nJuly 24–28\, 10 AM–3 PM\nNEW! Painting with Acrylics: Spend the whole week focusing on one medium. Teens will have both a morning and an afternoon session learning how to paint with acrylics. In this camp\, teens will learn how to block in a composition and see it come to life as they add paint to their canvas. They will learn the fundamentals of painting\, including brush techniques\, how to create light and shadow\, and color mixing. Teens will also learn how to handle the materials properly. Students should wear clothes that can get messy—acrylics don’t wash out of clothing! \nHALF-DAY DIGITAL SUMMER ART CAMP: DIGITAL GRAPHIC DESIGN\nJuly 24–28\nTweens (ages 10–12)\, 10 AM–12:15 PM\nTeens (ages 13+)\, 12:45–3 PM\nFrom cereal boxes to posters to social media\, graphic design is everywhere. It is a way of communicating using line\, shape\, color\, space\, and more to share information and ideas through art. During this week of camp\, campers will learn to think graphically by exploring page layout\, typography\, and marketing. The week will start by using traditional drawing skills to sketch out ideas\, then campers will learn to translate their ideas to the computer using Adobe Photoshop.

Growing up in Midland\, Texas\, in the 1970s\, he rides his bike around town\, hangs out with his best friend Eddie\, and eats at Texas Burger every chance he gets. But once he starts eighth grade\, his new teacher challenges his outlook on life and what he can expect from it. Kids will create projects such as papier-mâché foxes\, colored pencil fishbowls\, and ironically colorful zebras. \nWATERCOLOR EXPLORATION AND JEWELRY DESIGN (ages 10–12) WAITLIST ONLY\nJuly 17–21\, 10 AM–3 PM\nWatercolor Exploration: Watercolor is a classic painting medium that builds upon drawing skills while also incorporating color theory. The foundations of watercolor painting and color mixing will be explored as tweens are introduced to a variety of techniques\, including basic washes\, layering of paints\, and how to create strong compositions with the interplay of dark and light values.\nJewelry Design: Make wearable art! Tweens will experiment with jewelry-making techniques to create pendants and bracelets of their own original designs. After starting with a sketch\, the instructor will guide tweens on using the best materials to create their vision. Projects may include\, but are not limited to\, wrapped wire pendants\, polymer clay canes\, and recycled paper beads. \nFIBER SCULPTURE AND PAPERMAKING & MIXED MEDIA (ages 13+)\nJuly 17–21\, 10 AM–3 PM\nFiber Sculpture: Incorporate pattern and texture into sculpture through the use of fiber! Teens will learn to bring their ideas and sketches to life\, creating anything from plushies to abstract sculptures! While basic sewing may be involved\, teens will also explore other techniques to build their fiber sculptures. Pre-made patterns will be available\, but with the guidance of their instructor\, teens can also create their own templates for original designs.\nPapermaking & Mixed Media: Open up a world of possibilities with mixed media. In this camp\, teens will start by learning how to make paper and then use it as the basis of their mixed media project. They will learn techniques such as layering paper\, mono-printing\, and collage. Teens will have the choice to use interesting materials such as yarn\, fabric\, dried flowers\, pages from old books\, paint\, and more to create their mixed media artwork. \nHALF-DAY DIGITAL SUMMER ART CAMP: PHOTOGRAPHY & DIGITAL PHOTO EDITING\nJuly 17–21\nTweens (ages 10–12)\, 10 AM–12:15 PM\nTeens (ages 13+)\, 12:45–3 PM\nIn this five-day camp\, campers will learn how to analyze and speak about the images they see in their everyday lives. Campers will critically think and discuss the technical aspects of what comprises a meaningful photograph through artistic composition\, framing\, and form. By reinforcing photo vocabulary words\, campers will as well have the opportunity to create their own original photographs both in the Art Center and on photo-walks throughout the neighborhood. The program will culminate with campers digitally editing their photographs for the purpose of sharing them with their fellow campers or through the creation of their own photobooks. Students will need to bring a digital Camera or smart Phone with a camera to this camp.

During the week\, teens will get to use the pottery wheel to throw and embellish a functional ceramic piece that will be glazed and fired in the kiln. Teens will also learn the techniques for working with paper clay\, from building an armature to give the clay structure to decorating their creations using paint\, decoupage\, or other materials. Finally\, teens will explore polymer clay by making everyday objects in miniature.\nEssential Drawing & Painting Techniques: This camp is perfect for the teen looking to develop the foundational skills of drawing and painting. Teens will use their observational skills and gain familiarity with diverse media (such as graphite\, charcoal\, acrylics\, and watercolors) through drawing exercises that may include gesture drawings\, blind contours\, and contour drawings. Linear perspective\, color theory\, and building form with light and shadow will also be covered as teens render their artistic creations.

The ABCs of Paradise Found is a homage to Karen’s Caribbean ancestry and the region’s rich cultural heritage and natural splendor. Her husband\, artist Eric Rhinehart\, illustrated the story. Born in London and raised in New York\, Karen received her BA from Dartmouth College and her MS from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Karen and Eric have two daughters\, and two Balinese cats who preside over their home in Chatham\, New Jersey. \nERIC RHINEHART\, ILLUSTRATOR\nEric Rhinehart is a painter\, photographer\, and graphic designer who has worked as an illustrator and art director for corporate clients for more than 30 years. His watercolors have been exhibited in solo and group shows in New York\, New Jersey\, Miami\, Washington\, D.C.\, and his hometown\, Detroit.\nEric earned his BFA from Parsons School of Design in New York. \nThe ABCs of Paradise Found is his first book collaboration with his wife\, Karen Toulon. They are working on a second book about cats and complex relationships. \n  \n \nKIKE BANQUEZ y SUS TAMBORES\nNJ-based Oscar “Kike” Banquez is one of the leading exponents of traditional music from Colombia’s Caribbean coast living in the U.S. A gifted clarinetist and band leader\, Kike cut his chops in his native Colombia\, playing with Toto la Momposina among other storied tradition bearers. Now residing in Arlington\, his ensemble Kike Banquez y sus Tambores\, represents an important dimension of one of the nation’s fastest growing Colombian communities\, located in Hudson and Essex counties respectively.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Olas Caribeñas/Caribbean Waves
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, March 18\, from 2-4 PM\, for an afternoon with the exhibiting artists of Olas Caribeñas/Caribbean Waves\, the Art Center’s interdisciplinary initiative exploring the visual art and folklife traditions of the Caribbean diaspora in New Jersey. We’ll tour the Art Center’s galleries\, hear from the artists\, and engage in a Q&A session with visitors. \nIn the Main Gallery\, we will hear from Jairo Alfonso about his exhibition Objectscapes. Alfonso is a Cuban-born artist who has been living and working in New Jersey for nearly a decade. This exhibition is a survey of artworks created in the last 10 years that are all similarly concerned with the cultural and societal meanings of everyday objects. \nIn The Mitzi and Warren Eisenberg Gallery\, we will hear from Los Herederos\, a media arts non-profit organization\, who is showcasing The Sonicycle\, a mobile audio-visual unit that engages communities in sharing stories\, music\, and cultural traditions. This interactive digital caravan is fully outfitted with a DJ turntable\, speakers\, audio players\, a projector\, and recording equipment. \nFinally\, we’ll hear from figurative painter Kevin Darmanie\, whose painting Jack & Jill is on display in the Art Center’s Stair-gazing gallery. Born in Trinidad & Tobago\, Darmanie utilizes photographs of himself and his friends to create his portraiture\, referencing elements of his own life and shared experiences to inform clean narrative works which explore complex relationships between image\, object\, gaze\, and landscape. \nThis event is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. SUMMARY:Self-Expression Through Art: A Workshop for Teens
DESCRIPTION:Trying to balance it all as a teen can feel overwhelming\, and at times\, difficult to put into words. Using art as a tool for expression can help to identify\, manage\, and cope with various sources of stress and anxiety. Join art therapist Megan Tuttle in a safe space to create and have open and honest conversations! After graduating with her Bachelor’s and Master’s in Art Therapy\, Tuttle began working with teens as a Behavioral Health Counselor and eventually began working with various populations providing art classes and art therapy. In all of her programs\, she strives to create an environment that promotes a sense of freedom and self-discovery where there is no such thing as a “bad” emotion. \nThis workshop is free to the public\, but registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Los Herederos\, a media arts non-profit organization\, will showcase The Sonicycle\, a mobile audio-visual unit that engages communities in sharing stories\, music\, and cultural traditions. This interactive digital caravan is fully outfitted with a DJ turntable\, speakers\, audio players\, a projector\, and recording equipment. Los Herederos will use The Sonicyle to record stories from artists\, performers\, and community members in a public event at the Art Center on Saturday\, February 11\, from 12:30–4 PM. They will then produce a short audio documentary reel composed of oral histories\, local soundscapes\, and musical performances collected by folklorist Naomi Sturm-Wijesinghe and Los Herederos. \nClick here to register for this free event.
