SUMMARY:Fall Exhibitions Opening
DESCRIPTION:The Trustees of The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey cordially invite you to a special opening of our fall exhibitions on Friday\, September 19\, from 6:30–8:30 PM. \nThe evening will feature light snacks\, and refreshments will be served. A special sound activation by Joshua Marquez will begin at 7:30 PM. A daylight hours preview is also available from 4–5 PM. No refreshments will be served at the daylight hours preview. Register for the free event here. \nVACNJ brings ecology into focus across three exhibitions that move from the material excess of daily life to the marshes of our coast to re-mapped geographies. Featuring artists whose work engages with environments in and around New Jersey\, these projects consider how shifting conditions shape lives and invite visitors to connect more deeply with the ecosystems that surround them. \nAll That Consumes Me\, on view in the Main Gallery\, brings together Angeles Cossio\, Carolyn Lambert\, Joshua Marquez\, Lina Puerta\, and Marion Wilson\, whose use of found and reclaimed materials examines how everyday overconsumption impacts the world around us. \nIn the Mitzi and Warren Eisenberg Gallery\, Cecile Chong’s upcoming installation\, _other Nature – Marshland Tales\, continues her exploration of the fraught relationship between humans and the environment. In this new iteration\, Chong turns her attention to New Jersey’s wetlands\, with a particular focus on cattails as both material and metaphor. Her research traces the ecological and cultural significance of these reed-like plants\, which have long been integral to the region’s terrain. \nThe Marité & Joe Robinson Strolling Gallery I features This Was Always a Place\, a solo exhibition by Andrew Harrison. Through archives\, maps\, and embodied movement\, Harrison explores altered geographies—dwelling between rupture and repair—and argues for memory\, myth\, and imagination as essential tools for reshaping the world.

SUMMARY:Road Trip: Silver Art Projects
DESCRIPTION:Join us as the Art Center once again hits the road\, this time for a visit to Silver Art Projects at 4 World Trade Center in New York City. Silver Art is a non-profit organization providing artists with year-long studio spaces and career development opportunities. \n\nREGISTRATION IS CLOSED \n\nAmong the artists whose work we’ll be visiting is Distinguished Artist in Residence Caledonia Curry. Caledonia\, known as Swoon\, is a contemporary artist and filmmaker recognized around the world for her pioneering vision of public artwork. Through intimate portraits\, immersive installations\, and multi-year community-based projects\, she has spent more than 20 years exploring the depths of human complexity and asking how art can fundamentally re-envision the communities we live in towards a more just and equitable world. She is best known as one of the first women Street Artists to gain international recognition in a male-dominated field\, pushing its conceptual limits and paving the way for a generation of women Street Artists. \nWe’ll also be viewing the work of Senior Fellow\, Jared Owens. Jared\, whose work was featured in the recent VACNJ Main Gallery exhibition Something to Hold On To: Art and the Carceral System\, isa justice-impacted artist who works in painting\, sculpture\, and installation. He brings attention to architectures of confinement\, as well as the purposeful “shadowing” of humanity\, creating works that make visceral the oscillating experiences of oppression\, human dignity\, beauty\, and erasure. Intending to raise awareness of mass incarceration and its impact on millions of individuals\, he reveals correlations between the histories of slavery and the current systemic discrimination of many marginalized communities. \nTransportation from the Art Center will leave at 9 AM. Ticket fee includes lunch.

SUMMARY:Evening with an Artist: Marion Wilson
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, November 20\, for an engaging evening with exhibiting artist Marion Wilson. Marion will discuss her artistic process and creative approach\, offering insight into the works currently on view in the Art Center’s Main Gallery exhibition\, All That Consumes Me. Following the discussion\, Marion will participate in a Q&A session moderated by VACNJ Curator Jordan Horton\, allowing visitors to ask questions and explore the ideas behind her work in greater depth. \nThe evening will also include food and wine\, offering guests the chance to continue the conversation and connect with fellow art enthusiasts in a relaxed\, social setting. Click here to register! \nMarion Wilson’s art investigates landscape as a way to foster connection to self and place. Through painting\, photography\, and installation\, she explores our relationship to nature amid climate change and ecological loss. Her work often bridges art and science\, partnering with botanists\, architects\, and urban communities to imagine more just and sustainable futures.Wilson approaches social and ecological challenges through the lens of creative inquiry\, using scientific tools and observational methods to “look closely and pay attention to what is small\, omnipresent\, and frequently overlooked—drawing parallels between the natural world and the most fundamental aspects of human presence.” \nWilson is the founder of MLAB and MossLab\, mobile eco/art labs that examined moss species along the East Coast while also serving as classrooms for hundreds of Syracuse students each year. She also founded 601 Tully\, transforming an abandoned residence in Syracuse\, NY into a neighborhood art center\, and more recently reimagined a houseboat in Vineyard Haven\, MA as a floating studio and public platform for environmental dialogue. \nA former Associate Professor at Syracuse University\, Wilson created the award-winning New Directions in Social Sculpture curriculum and collaborated with botanist Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer\, whose teachings on Traditional Ecological Knowledge continue to inform her practice. \n“Compost/Composed”\, Marion Wilson’s work in the exhibition in the galleries is an exploration of humanity’s connection to nature\, community\, and self through food. Working from political\, cultural\, and ecological lenses\, I investigate how these entanglements have been complicated by COVID-19\, which has caused major shifts in the way communities access and experience food together\, furthering issues of scarcity. At the core of the project is an exercise in testing the limits of confinement both artistically and practically: how can art both transform and be transformed by scarcity? Through photography\, painting\, and natural dye-making\, this new work will present each component as both process and product\, following the transformation of food from decomposing compost; to natural\, hand-made dye; to the final artistic work\, to social gathering. \nMarion Wilson divides her time between Brooklyn\, NY and a houseboat on Martha’s Vineyard. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Spring Exhibitions Opening
DESCRIPTION:The Trustees of The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey cordially invite you to a special opening of our spring exhibitions on Friday\, February 13\, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. The evening will feature light snacks\, and refreshments will be served. Click here to RSVP for the free event. A daylight hours preview is also available from 4–5 PM. No refreshments will be served at the daylight hours preview. \nThis spring\, VACNJ will showcase three exhibitions that examine various intersections of identity and representation. The exhibitions will feature artists whose work engages with themes such as material culture\, Indigenous identity\, queerness\, and cityscapes\, while questioning how narratives and visibility are controlled and reclaimed. Special attention is paid to the various processes of photography as artists demonstrate contemporary approaches to wet plate\, photogravure\, and other techniques. \nIn partnership with Art Bridges\, the Art Center is proud to host In Conversation: Will Wilson in the Main Gallery. In Conversation presents the works of Diné (Navajo) photographer Will Wilson (b. 1969) and Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868–1952). \nThe investigation of artists’ use of portraiture continues in the Mitzi and Warren Eisenberg Gallery with Gabriel Garcia Roman’s solo exhibition Present and Growing. Featured in this solo exhibition are not only his best-known portrait series\, “Queer Icons\,” but also a range of his works that capture his experiences as a queer Mexican-born artist from a working-class family. \nIn the Art Center’s Marité and Joe Robinson Strolling Gallery I\, photographer Chrystofer Davis captures the portrait of a city in his exhibition With Passing Years. In a selection of photos of his hometown of Newark\, NJ\, Davis showcases the personality of the Four Corners District\, combining his work with archival photos courtesy of the Newark Public Library to reveal the many lives the city has lived.
