Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2019

MLK Jr. Day at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey:

Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘what are you doing for others?’–Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “The Strength of Love,” 1963

This year, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey will open its museum and studio spaces to members of the community so that they may view the current exhibitions and participate in the creation of a community social justice quilt. The current exhibition on view features the artist Kevin Blythe Sampson, a sculptor, painter, and muralist recognized for tackling difficult issues through socially-engaged artwork. His sculptures draw spiritual energy from the community at large and reflect an intimate understanding of the contemporary African-American experience. This current exhibition incorporates drawings, a site-specific mural, and sculptures, including a recent series in porcelain that responds to both the Black and Blue Lives Matter movements. Sampson addresses these complicated issues from his perspective as an African American artist as well as a retired police officer.

In the spirit of Sampson’s work, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the service to the community and social justice that they both provided, we are creating a social justice quilt and invite all to come to contribute a square. The squares will be pre-cut and materials will be available and on hand for you to write, draw, paint, or embellish them in any way you wish. We will complete the quilt and display in a location TBD in Summit in the spring of 2019.

This program will take place on Monday, January 21, from 12–4 PM at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey. It is free and open to the public and all are welcome! You may pre-register here or walk in on the day of the event.
