JERSEY BOUNCE
July 29 - September 25, 2011
Opening Reception: Friday, July 29, 6 pm - 8 pm
Closing Reception: Friday, September 23, 6 pm - 8 pm
The
Jersey Bounce
conversation began when I invited a team of NJ-based curators and collectors to collaborate on this exhibition. Starting with several key pieces of work, each participant has in turn chosen another work that responds in some way—formally (by composition, material, color, etc.), conceptually, or by subject matter. The sequential placement of these art objects in the gallery creates a narrative thread linking individual works to one another and forms a web of interesting connections. Viewers are invited to observe the visual “conversations” that result.
As the Visual Art Center of New Jersey’s first staff curator, I have several goals for my inaugural exhibition: to honor the Art Center’s long tradition of using talented volunteer curators who worked collaboratively on exhibitions; to draw attention to New Jersey as a relevant and dynamic site for viewing contemporary art and to acknowledge some of the institutions and people who foster this atmosphere; and to celebrate the practice of colleagues bouncing ideas off one another. Lastly, I am interested in exploring how, through the juxtaposition of objects we create new contexts for the understanding and enjoyment of art. My hope is that this exhibition will spark additional meaningful conversations about art. If
Jersey Bounce
accomplishes any or all of these goals, it is through the inspiration and efforts of the entire team to whom I am immensely grateful.
