Alan White, a longtime resident of Berkeley Heights, has been making designs in bronze, hardwood, and semi-precious stone for forty years. A former scientist at Bell Labs, Mr. White found a strong connection between the way his science and design work are informed—by a desire to discover the many possible ramifications of a fortuitous discovery. Of late, he has collaborated with his granddaughter Ellen E. Monroe, a Fine Arts major at Smith College, and son Jeffrey, who has a PhD in physics from California Institute of Technology.
Some of his early bronzes were cast at a backyard foundry built by Robert Marcus formerly of New Providence. Later bronzes were cast by Reinmuth Bronze Studio, in Eugene, Oregon. Patina was provided by Anton Wright at the Johnson Atelier in Hamilton, New Jersey.
