Pottery - From Tumbler to Teapot

Various methods of clay construction will be explored, including hand building with special emphasis on the potter\'s wheel for both functional and decorative pottery forms, from bowls, to cups, to vases and teapots. Glazing and decorating techniques will also be explored. Students must have completed beginner class. Limited to 12 students. Minimum Enrollment: 11

This class will introduce hand building and wheel throwing techniques and feature instructor demonstrations each week for the beginner’s benefit. There will be an emphasis on catering to the individual and providing support for reaching personal goals for the more advanced students. Emphasis on hand building techniques. Explore approaches for decorative and functional forms, such as combining clay colors for special effects. Study oxides and chemicals for unglazed clay surfaces. Ceramic Tiles

Students will take a humorously serious look at the world of ceramic tiles and hand built forms. Learn to design, create, and display various types of ceramic tiles and discover the ancient secret of how to keep them flat. Hand building techniques, from simple pinch pots and trays to complex slab built forms, will also be covered. Individual projects and specific areas of interest will be developed and encouraged. The class will include one-on-one and group critiques. Minimum Enrollment: 9

Beginner & Intermediate Wheel Throwing

This class provides an introduction to creating wheel thrown pottery. Learn the processes of centering, opening, and raising the clay. Particular emphasis is on form and function. Take each step to finishing the pot, including trimming, texturing and glazing techniques. You will be sure to receive Individual attention. Minimum Enrollment: 9

Teapots & Tall Vessels

This class has a special focus on the art of making teapots, both wheel-thrown and hand built; plus, a continuous development of techniques for making tall and large forms. Demonstrations and individual instruction will be integral to the course. For intermediate to advanced students with at least one previous full ceramics class. Relearn the basics or increase your skill in creating thrown pottery, from functional ware, such as cups and bowls, to more decorative, sculptural forms. Individual attention is underscored to allow the students to reach his/her level of proficiency. Demonstrations on throwing and glazing will supplement the class. Some previous wheel experience required. Hand builders are also welcome. Limited to 12 students. Minimum Enrollment: 11

This is a class for those who want to play with clay and discover new possibilities in the world of wheel throwing. Students will learn the basic techniques through step by step instruction to build a solid foundation for creating wheel thrown pieces.
