Programs for Special Audiences

Educational Programming is critical to the Art Center’s community service programming and one of the most important ways it fulfills its commitment to “bringing art and people together.” These programs make an educational visual arts experience available to underserved, economically disadvantaged and/or marginalized audiences, including: serving at-risk youth; the elderly; persons with disabilities; children from dual-working parent households; children from diverse populations; and individuals from low-income households. The Art Center provides an art professional on-site at partner institutions to instruct and engage students over a course of multiple sessions, while additional programs take place at the Art Center.

The Art Center’s Programs for Special Audiences are carefully designed to augment the services provided by the partner social service organization, school, or community-based group and tailored to the specific needs of the partner institution. Curricula encourage self-expression through the study of art history, interpretation, vocabulary, and design and explore creative processes, tools, and techniques. Participants create original works of art and gain a sense of accomplishment and enhanced self-esteem.

A brief overview of the current Programs for Special Audiences:

Artists with Disabilities works with the Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC) to provide adults ages 21 - 60+ with developmental disabilities a creative outlet for expression in the Art Center’s studios.

The Connection for Women & Families: The After School Enrichment Program engages Summit Public School students ages 4 - 11 whose parent(s) work through the evening, in homework and art activities.

NJ SEEDS & Young Scholars Program prepares high-achieving, low-income Newark students in grades 5 - 6 for placement at competitive day and boarding schools. The Art Center provides the visual arts and art historical component to this program.

Discover the Arts Summer Camp, run in partnership with the PG Chambers School, is for children with special needs ages 5 - 14. During the three-day program, an artist from the Art Center and staff member from P.G. Chambers School lead each session to enhance the sensory, cognitive and communicative development of the children enrolled.

SAGE Eldercare Spend-A-Day Program: Art from the Heart enhances the quality of life of older adults with mild to severe aging disorders through art projects to keep their minds sharp and to encourage self-expression.

Summit Housing Authority’s art program for children in grades K - 12 residing at the Glenwood family housing complex strengthens their abilities in school through group participation in specially planned art projects.
