Learn the ancient art of granulation—fusing tiny spheres of metal onto a backsheet to create interesting patterns. This workshop explores the 3,000-year-old history of this fascinating technique, including how to create granules in various sizes, preparing backsheet metal, making organic glue for adhering granules, and how to arrange granules into geometric and organic designs. Demonstrations on fusing granules to backsheet will be given. Students will create small-scale earrings with their granulated designs by beginning with fine silver and then moving into 22k gold (optional). This two-day workshop will cover all the critical aspects of enameling on metal. On the first day, students will learn to prepare metal and then apply vitreous enamel using wet packing and sifting techniques for kiln firing. Use of stencils, sgraffitto, cloisonné wires, and glass threads will also be covered. Opaque and transparent enamels will be used and the addition of silver foil will be demonstrated, plus how to finish the piece by stoning, etching or flash firing. On the second day, students will explore a variety of expressive materials for kiln-based enameling such as: liquid enamels, including their use on 3D copper mesh, use of underglaze pencils, graphite, the addition of seed and reflector beads, and sugar coat. Metal smithing skills and strategies for soldering for enamel, using corrugated copper, plus tabs, rivets and staples to make advanced forms. All materials included.
