New Classes & Workshops

Each semester the Art Center offers new classes and workshops to enhance your skills, broaden your horizons and provide insight to a variety of subjects and media. New classes and workshops in every media are listed below - use the filters and drop down menus to sort the list.


Spring Semester begins April 7.
Early Registration Discount: Register by February 23 to receive a $5 DISCOUNT on class tuition.
On-Time Registration: February 24 - March 30
Late Registration: Beginning  March 31 a $10 LATE FEE will be applied to class tuition.
 
Winter Semester runs through March.

Students will learn about and work with various clay bodies and slips, and experiment with all glazing techniques available at the Art Center. Everyone admires the beauty and expertise of a well-done watercolor floral. This class is for those who would like to learn the skills necessary to create a floral painting. Working at an individual pace, students will be encouraged to develop a personal style while learning how to mix and apply paint to achieve a luminous look. Several floral paintings will be completed over the course of this class and each one will become more complex as we raise the level of skill and ability. Techniques for backgrounds and making the whole painting come together will also be covered. Students will work from photos and still lifes provided or from their own reference materials. Knowledge of basic watercolor techniques is helpful, but not necessary.

This class is open to all levels of experience and will focus on building skills and individual direction for personal expression. An introduction to a variety of handbuilding techniques and potter’s wheel will be covered, including glazing and finishing of projects. Slide presentations will expose students to pottery from various cultures across time. The instructor welcomes and supports cross-over or work in conjunction with other media such as collage, drawing, painting, papermaking or printmaking.

This class is ideal for intermediate and advanced photographers who wish to strengthen photographic concepts. During the session, emphasis will be placed on building a strong body of artwork. The instructor will review the evolution and history of the photographic medium as well as explore the artwork of contemporary photographers and the class will discuss the integrity and significance of photographic images. Shooting assignments will be given intended to get the mind working differently and shift students out of their comfort zones. Some of class time will be dedicated to studio work and making fine prints. During the session students will have at least two opportunities for critique. Presentation methods, composition, editing, and sequencing will be addressed. Materials will be discussed the first day of class; please bring examples of current project(s) on the first day if possible.

Watercolor is often thought of as the most complex of media to work in, but it can produce beautiful elegant results with some simple techniques, as long as the student has a good understanding of drawing, values and keeping colors pure. Emphasis in this workshop will be on getting a good start by drawing the subject first, followed by application of clean, pure colors. Techniques such as washes, wet into wet and glazing will be demonstrated and discussed in detail. Perfect for the beginner! All materials included.

For those with a grasp of enameling basics, this workshop will introduce students to a variety of expressive materials for kiln-based enameling, such as: liquid enamels, 3D copper mesh, underglaze pencils, graphite, seed and reflector beads, and sugar coat. For those with metal smithing skills, this course will also discuss strategies soldering for enamel, using corrugated copper, tabs, rivets and staples to make advanced forms. Colored pencils can be an amazing medium, if you know how to use them correctly. Techniques of layering, burnishing, and using toned paper will be demonstrated. Using still lifes, and photo reference students will gain a stronger understanding of how the medium works, along with understanding the use of color and introducing other media, such as watercolor, to the mix.

What makes objects look convincing and real? Light and shadow! Shadows give volume and definition; without shadows and shading, objects look flat and two dimensional. This workshop will use directed lighting to create controlled shadows that will make drawings and paintings stand out and have real presence.
