NATURAL BEAUTY: CREATING BAMBOO SCULPTURES
Master Workshop with Alastair Noble
Sunday, January 20, 10 am – 3 pm

Alastair Noble, international sculptor, installation artist and print-maker, will lead this Master Workshop for those interested in working with unexpected materials such as bamboo. This workshop is held in conjunction with Cordy Ryman: Shuffle / Scrap / Echo . This Main Gallery exhibition features site specific installations created by New York based artist Cordy Ryman who manipulates unconventional materials such as wood, metal, Velcro, staples and scraps to create his sculptures. Noble has used bamboo for over twenty-five years in many of his sculptural constructions. His work features manipulated bamboo in a multitude of ways creating large and dynamic structures that correspond to the natural environment, urban settings, architecture, labyrinths and the human figure.

This workshop will investigate the aesthetic consideration of line, shape, scale and space through fabricating bamboo structures reflecting forms found in nature. Students will focus on constructing small scale portable bamboo sculptures that are table size and easy to transport. The finished sculptures can be exhibited as is or enlarged to full scale at a later date. All students will be given a complete bamboo model making kit, which will include a pack of extra thick bamboo skewers, mini long-nose pliers and wire cutters, heavy duty snap off knife, binding materials and Elmer’s glue. Everyone will construct at least one sculpture during the workshop.

Cordy Ryman: Shuffle / Scrap / Echo will be on view January 11, 2013 – March 24, 2013.
