This class, taught by world-renowned printmaker and founding member of the Manhattan Graphics Center, Vijay Kumar, is geared to both the beginning and experienced printmaker. Vijay’s expertise in a variety of printmaking techniques will provide an overview of both traditional and contemporary etching methods, including monotype and monoprinting. Students will be encouraged to use and combine various techniques, such as drypoint, soft and hard ground, aquatint and spit bite, as well as viscosity printing, transferring photocopies directly onto the etching plate and working in a painterly manner with toner or sugar lift. Experience this beautiful and versatile art form for yourself! Some materials are included; an additional Materials list will be discussed during the first class.

This class will delve into the world of paper – where it comes from, which papers work best for which printmaking techniques and the inherent qualities of various papers.
