This class, taught by world-renowned printmaker and founding member of the Manhattan Graphics Center, Vijay Kumar, is geared to both the beginning and experienced printmaker. Vijay’s expertise in a variety of printmaking techniques will provide an overview of both traditional and contemporary etching methods, including monotype and monoprinting. Students will be encouraged to use and combine various techniques, such as drypoint, soft and hard ground, aquatint and spit bite, as well as viscosity printing, transferring photocopies directly onto the etching plate and working in a painterly manner with toner or sugar lift. This class introduces the creative collaboration of figure drawing and monotype printmaking. Students will explore the beauty and complexity of the human figure and the many ways it can be presented using various monoprint techniques. Working from live models, this class combines the best of lyrical figure drawing and the precision of monotype printing for a unique creative experience.
