This comprehensive class embraces all personal styles – figurative, expressionistic or abstract. Mixed media may be used, with a focus on oil and acrylic. The goal of this class is to have students create the best possible piece of art they can, to express what they have envisioned as closely as possible, using whatever tools or medium are required. It is a “no rules” class relying on the laws of shape, color and intuition. Students work on individual projects at their own pace. Individual instruction and class discussion create a warm and supportive atmosphere.

Perfect for the beginner as well as the experienced painter, this general painting class places the emphasis on oil painting, but students may work in the medium of their choice. Each class will begin with a short talk or demonstration covering many topics such as subject matter selection, composition, layout and blocking, abstraction and pattern, development of form, color mixing, detail and finishing, as well as how to speak about art. Learn to paint with watercolor as a transparent medium. Applying the basic techniques such as, flat wash, graded wash, wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, and dry brush strokes. Students are encouraged to use experimental approach to explore possibilities of varied textural effects. Actual demonstrations are necessary for the student to grasp these principles behind transparent watercolor painting. Forms and atmospheric perspective are given importance through the play of tonal values.

Many of the world’s master painters have used the photograph as a visual record and inspiration for new developments in painting. The photo is a great model to inspire creation. The student will not duplicate the photo but rather interpret it. Cropping and proportional experimentation allow the artist to achieve a painting of a similar or different sensibility. The photo can be personal, travel-related or from the media. Individual instruction and class discussion create a warm and supportive atmosphere.

Everyone admires the beauty and expertise of a well-done watercolor floral. This class is for those who would like to learn the skills necessary to create a floral painting. Working at an individual pace, students will be encouraged to develop a personal style while learning how to mix and apply paint to achieve a luminous look. Several floral paintings will be completed over the course of this class and each one will become more complex as we raise the level of skill and ability. Techniques for backgrounds and making the whole painting come together will also be covered. Students will work from photos and still lifes provided or from their own reference materials. Knowledge of basic watercolor techniques is helpful, but not necessary.

Encaustic is the art of painting with molten beeswax mixed with colored pigments and resin. The results are like no other medium—mysterious, deep and translucent. Students will gain the fundamental knowledge of working with encaustics, allowing for personal exploration. Receive informal critiques of your work in an environment where having discussions, taking risks, letting go of preconceived notions, and having fun is encouraged. This class is for students who chose work more realistically and representationally. Using oil, acrylic or watercolor, students will learn how to take a painting from start to finish, focusing on all the crucial elements such as composition, proportion, color, and structure. Subtleties such as glazes, and pushing light and darks, and texture will be addressed. Several demonstrations will be given using all of these mediums throughout the course of the class. Students can choose to work from a still life or a personal photo reference.

This class will introduce artists to the concept of field sketching with the intent of using the sketches created on location as references for paintings done later in the studio. The class will alternate (weather permitting) between sketching on location and working on studio paintings created from the sketches done in the field. Emphasis on location will be on accurate, quick drawing, perspective, and blocking in composition and values. Work in the studio will focus on using the field sketches and reference photos taken on location to create more formally refined works based on the sketches.

Color! This class is for students who prefer to create in color. Students will create with oil, acrylics, pastel, watercolor, colored pencils and any other medium you choose to bring to class. Selecting either a still life or a photograph, students will work on a subject that interests them while learning about different media. Students can use their preferred medium and learn to work with other media by watching instructor demonstrations each week. As they work on their chosen subject, students will understand how to achieve the correct color, value, texture and overall composition in a colored medium. Basics such as drawing and composition will also be demonstrated.

First time outdoor painters with some oil painting experience are welcome. First class meets at the Art Center for overview before going outdoors to paint.

Painting plein air can be frustrating with fast moving light and painting from photos can be misleading. Through engaging lectures and demonstrations on value, drawing, atmosphere, color mixing, composition, and creating dynamic light effects students will learn how to turn simple landscape photographs into luminous landscape paintings. Student will work on paintings each week applying skills acquired during class to create a magical light filled landscape on canvas. This class is for all levels, beginners are encouraged & all mediums are welcome.
