AN IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMS
Since digital courses were introduced at the Art Center over seven years ago, the department has grown by leaps and bounds. We started with just a few basic classes and a handful of students. Now we offer a wide variety of classes geared to everyone from beginners to the most advanced students. Hundreds of students take a digital class or workshop of some type at the Art Center each year. Whether it’s photography, Photoshop®, or Personal Digital Projects, we have an active and committed group of students (and faculty) with new students discovering the joys of digital art each semester. Today the Art Center’s Photography & Digital Media Department rivals any similar program in the New York metropolitan area, with class fees at a fraction of the cost. While we started with limited equipment, our digital lab now has state-of-the-art computers and printers – some of this expensive equipment was generously donated by our very involved students.
While we are very pleased with the popularity of our classes and our high level of professionalism, we now fi nd that some changes must be made in order to sustain our digital programs at the same level of quality and expertise. Digital is an expensive medium. The costs for equipment and maintenance, software updates, specialty inks and printing papers keep going up and these costs cannot be completely covered by the class fees. The cost of these high quality items has become exorbitant, especially as we have more advanced students printing numerous pieces. To deal with this issue, and the impracticality of storing a large range of paper surfaces and sizes, the Art Center will no longer be providing printing paper as of Fall Semester 2012 – as is the practice of other digital programs in the New York metropolitan area. At the start of each semester, our instructors will advise students on the best papers for students’ individual needs. With this change, our instructors believe that all of our students will be better served. We look forward to serving our existing digital students and we also look forward to the continued growth and popularity of our exemplary Photography & Digital Media Department.
Mari D’Alessandro, Director of Programs & Communications
