All methods of clay construction will be explored, including handbuilding and the potter’s wheel, to create functional, sculptural, and decorative pottery forms. Advanced wheel techniques, use of the slab roller and extruder, and surface texturing will be featured. Glazing and decorating techniques will also be covered. Our objective will be to expand and improve skills to develop a personal style. Students must have completed at least one beginner class.

This class will cover advanced wheel and handbuilding techniques for making large and tall forms, both functional and sculptural. Advanced wheel-throwing methods include a combination of wheel, extruded and handbuilt elements. Texturing and experimental glazing approaches will be explored. Demonstrations and individual instruction are key elements to this class. Intermediate and advanced students only.

Learn the basics of making pottery on mankind’s most important tool – the wheel! All the steps will be covered with individual attention: wedging, centering, opening up, the bowl, the cylinder, trimming…and from there, the sky’s the limit! Basic functional forms will be demonstrated, along with all the “trimmings” including glazing and firing to produce beautiful and useful pieces of stoneware pottery.
