Encaustic is the art of painting with molten beeswax mixed with colored pigments and resin. The results are like no other medium—mysterious, deep and translucent. Students will gain the fundamental knowledge of working with encaustics, allowing for personal exploration. Receive informal critiques of your work in an environment where having discussions, taking risks, letting go of preconceived notions, and having fun is encouraged. Some materials provided, see additional materials list.

Artists have long been intrigued with this popular medium for the speed, spontaneity, and open, free quality it offers. In brief, a monoprint is a method by which an image is created on a plate (such as Plexiglas®), and then transferred onto paper using a press. Many textures can be used to enhance the image. Limited editions or unique one-of-a kind prints can be created with the use of rich and colorful inks. The options are varied and endless. Luminous fluid brush strokes and delicate markings offer the elements of surprise. In addition to the monoprint, relief printing and image transfers will be introduced. Everyone works on individual projects in a supportive and informal class environment. All levels are welcome. The student will receive individual attention to help obtain the envisioned image. Attendance at the first class is strongly advised. Some materials are included; see additional materials list.

Emphasis on location will be on accurate, quick drawing, perspective, and blocking in composition and values. Work in the studio will focus on using the field sketches and reference photos taken on location to create more formally refined works based on the sketches.
